Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her grandmother as a single child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education and also worked at two jobs. Her dream was to be an English secondary school teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after completing three years of study and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as the work of her own. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. In a Roots performance, she made her debut as an artist. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
